With the rise of the new star, J, the wait for the first true Korean female R&B artist is over. If you had seen Korean music shows, like MBC or SBS, airing weekly, you must have certainly notice the unique singing technique that J has. Some of her gestures on stage remarkably resemble that of the Japanese R&B queen, Utada Hikaru. Her best song for her second album, which has dominated many music charts in Korea, is track #4, and it showed off her ability to really express the "R&B feeling". Although R&B has not had the popularity as hip hop and dance in the Korean music industry, the success of J will certainly draw more new coming R&B artists. Just as Utada has sparked R&B in Japan, it is likely that J is starting the R&B trend in Korea. Although her voice is at times hoarse, it can be her distinctiveness from other singers rather than a weakness. Other great slow songs include tracks #2 & #5. J also showed that she can sing catchy fast beat songs such as track #8. However, in general, her voice is not as fitting in singing fast songs in comparison with female pop singers such as Um Jung Hwa and Kim Hyun Jung. The album also includes different versions, such as a remix, a instrumental, and a performance version, of several songs. Overall, J has proven to be a talented R&B singers, and has rocketed to the top among the highly competitive Korean female artists. |
